The #1 point here is that India is a really bad market for investment banking. See: https://mergersandinquisitions.com/investment-banking-india/

It’s a tiny market vs. the population size, and to have a good chance at real IB roles, you need to go to one of the top IIMs or IITs in most cases. If not, leave the country and do an MSF or MBA in the U.S. or Europe or another region with more jobs. If you can’t do that, maybe think about non-IB roles within India or smaller/startup banks there or something similar. Equity research might work, but I assume there are even fewer jobs in ER in India since ER is a smaller industry everywhere.

I’m a sophomore and want to make a career in Investment banking. I’m been following your content for a while now and it’s been very helpful. I need advice on how should I proceed further with regards to internships and also should I consider a MS finance or MBA if I don’t achieve an appropriate finance job. I’ve read your article on CFA so I’m more focused on getting an internship in finance or equity research but what if I don’t secure a good job after undergrad cause mostly they offer sales role in finance so what should I do in that scenario?

An IB Analyst role, or an Analyst in some other industry? I would need more specifics here to tell you anything useful. If you’re seeking IB Analyst roles, I think it might be tough because you’re over-qualified with 4 years of ER experience. You might have to target Associate roles or consider an MBA in that case (an direct targeting of Associate roles is difficult because most recruiting takes place out of MBAs or at the lateral level from professionals currently working in closely related fields). For other industries, it will probably be some combination of networking and self-study.

How would you approach getting into an analyst role?

I would probably just pick the 4-year degree so you can qualify for as many MBA or Master’s options as possible later on. It will also be easier to explain and present to U.S.-based universities.

I am currently being offered a place at top universities in India for a 3 year UG or a 4 year UG . But my goal is to break into IB in the USA/UK through masters in finance. Which one do you think I should choose the 3 year one is in economics and the 4 year one in data science and AI. I don’t really have a preference for one above the other. I am thinking of the 3 year one as I will be able to get into Masters 1 year before and hence would be able to start working earlier incase of a 4 year degree .But If I want to do an MBA later as I saw that Stanford doesn’t even consider 3 year degree from India eligible for MBA’s but other top schools do consider it like Harvard , Wharton etc. What do you think will the 3 year degree put me at any disadvantage in regarding to the opportunities in any way ?But in the bright side I will be able to start work a whole 1 year before and hence start earning before as well. Please enlighten me with your opinion on this.

Thank You

I would need more context to answer your question (Which country are you a citizen of? Where do you have permission to work? What is your actual university?), but in general, you should go to London for IB internships and full-time roles in Europe. Other European cities pay less and have worse recruiting and exit opportunities. So if your goal is to work in Europe, yes, aim for internships in London along with everything else you need to get in.

However, Barcelona does not have a great deal flow like Madrid does. What do you recommend me to do? Would looking for summer jobs in London during the holidays help me get into IB? Considering that I already have a good technical background in valuation, financial modeling, etc. Would JPM, MS or GS look at me?

That’s a close call, but I think Standard Chartered corporate banking would be slightly better because of the bank name/reputation vs. a lesser-known boutique, even if the work is a bit less relevant. Also, it will be more difficult to move from a boutique in Asia back to the US or Europe later.

I am graduating from HEC Paris in a few months and it has been really difficult finding a job in IB in Europe. My end goal is really to break into IB with a particular interest in DCM. I currently have two offers one is for a corporate banking role (ie: credit analysis) in Standard Chartered Bank and the other is for a regional boutique investment bank in Asia. I’m weighing SCB and the potential to lateral into DCM after given SCB’s DCM franchise. But then I am quite unsure as to how great the learning and experience could be in the regional boutique (7-10 deals per year from $50-300 million) I’m a bit lost rn given that neither of my options are great and would really appreciate your advice on this. Thank you!
