I am only 9 months out of undergrad, I’ve gone through the BIWS O&G course, and am in the process of writing my own O&G pitches. I would be immensely grateful if you could ask this interviewee how he’d feel being put in contact with someone looking to establish a long-term IB career here in Calgary. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

I agree with you in that Calgary is collectively an equal opportunity employer. With respect to the UWO/Ivey discrepancy, Ivey is the business school at Western, however, there is also a business program at Western known as BMOS.

The Business Management and Organizational Studies program is significantly less prestigious than Ivey and there is virtually no IB recruiting avenues defined for the program. Despite this, you can still break in if you hustle your ass off. I am a junior interning at a MM boutique in NY for the summer and I know a few grads who of the program who have ended up in Calgary. Not without hustling hard though.

Yes, it will help. I don’t really have a good sense for which manager is best for you because I don’t know what strategies you’re using or what your goals are, but you should pick someone who aligns with those. I doubt he will offer you a job on the spot, but you could definitely use it to stay in touch and meet others in the industry through him via referrals.

I entered the PortfolioswithPurpose.org contest this year. Believe it or not, I’m currently in first place in the novice category.

Given that the contest is only one year long, what do you think of my portfolio? The contest still runs for another 11 months, but if I win, I get a meeting with the hedge fund manager of my choice. Who would you choose to have dinner with? I do come from a non-traditional background, but do you think I would have a shot at a job with the hedge fund manager I met with?

Cheers!

Josh

We don’t go through engineering matters in the course, though we do go through the nuances of oil and gas accounting, valuation, and financial modeling with detailed, step-by-step video training. https://breakingintowallstreet.com/biws/oil-gas-modeling/

Maybe, but often what people perceive as “racism” is actually just not fitting in with the team or doing things that are strange in the culture of the country they’re interviewing in… also, there is an extremely high percentage of Asians working as IB analysts these days so I am skeptical of this premise that banks only hire people fitting that profile.

Racism thing is not entirely untrue. There have been 2-3 article on popular american news websites (WSJ et all) that recruiters hire people of a certain profile like white, fratty, ivy league, elite etc

In general most banks don’t like to hire remote candidates because they need you on-site for deals. You might be able to pull it off at a very small bank that’s in need of candidates, but I have never really seen a large firm do that.
