I’m not sure I would describe equity research as “aggressive,” but it does require long-ish hours and paying attention to the news frequently. It is individual work in the sense that you’re in a team but have responsibility for covering specific companies. You do need a solid understanding of the science for biotech ER, but most of the job still consists of accounting and finance, with scientific knowledge used to validate your assumptions.

I have a PhD in biology and finished work as a post-doc recently, I am starting to explore my options outside of academia. I spoke to a equity research analyst and I got the impression it might be an aggressive, individual type of work with lots of pure economics. What do you think about this? How much science is really needed.

In almost all cases, you want to finish the medical degree even if you’ve decided against medicine. And you should rule out healthcare PE unless you have IB experience first.

With the others, you can sometimes find groups willing to hire you off-cycle straight out of medical school, but it’s not that common, and you normally need experience that’s a bit more relevant first, such as some type of valuation/finance experience, startup consulting, the CFA, etc. There’s a really good interview detailing this path here:

Should I finish my degree before pursing these internships or are these firms interested in taking on medical students?

If I am a very experienced academic physician, and want to keep doing it, but having done it for so long, I also want to add to this career by taking on consulting work in biotechnology/biomedical equity research. So not full time, not part time, but as an in-residence consultant, or per project consultant for investment banks, venture caps hedge fund, mutual fund companies, etc. Should I use an agency, write to as many firms as possible, use Indeed, Linkenln? Thank you for your advice.

I am very interested to get into the financial industry to drive more innovations in the biotechnology space. As I do not have any financial work experience, what can I do to build my CV before joining an equity research firm?

Is there anywhere I can find a FREE equity research report powerpoint sample. Though preferred, It doesn’t need to be biotech.
