Yes, probably a better vacation destination than a place to do banking.

The bank would probably try to relocate you to another country, if possible. Some 1st years get relocated to Asia or Europe in this situation even if they wouldn’t ordinarily work in one of those places. In the worst case scenario, they might say you have to leave, but in most cases if you’ve done reasonably well relocation is the most likely outcome.

The equity research one sounds more relevant, yes, but if it’s only once a week you may not have enough to write about or talk about in interviews.

If you can do both, that might be a better option. But if not, the year-long equity research internship is probably a better bet than the impact investing internship.

Yes, you can still call it Equity Research even if it’s run out of the wealth management division… as long as the work is actual equity research.

Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback. I was also offered a once a week 1 year long equity research at a wealth management office of a major BB (Think Goldman/JPM/MS) in a major city. Do you think this would be a better option than the impact investing internship despite the fact that it is only once a week? Or would it be a good idea to try and see if I could do them both at the same time? Previous interns who’ve done that program have placed really well and I could take classes/graduate early if I just did it alone.

Also, could I reasonably write this on my resume as “Equity Research Summer Associate at MS/JPM/Goldman” despite the fact that it is run out of their wealth management division?

I think “Impact Investing Summer Analyst” is OK, but if you’re interested in pursuing IB you may want to go with a title that sounds more closely related such as one of the other two you mentioned (though they are both a bit of a stretch… “Infrastructure Investment Analyst” may be closer). It’s a decent option for IB, but probably not quite as relevant as equity research.

It’s harder to work in the US coming from any other country due to the work visa requirements. I don’t think it’s harder to work *at* the UK offices of US-based banks since they mostly hire people from the UK and EU more broadly.

If I were to do this internship would it be okay for me to write “impact investing summer analyst” or would you go for “merchant banking summer analyst”/”venture capital summer analyst”? Also, do you think this is a good internship to pursue if I’m interested in going into IB? I spent the summer after my freshman year doing equity research and I’m afraid this is a step down.

Thanks for the reply.
I think it may be harder to get into an American bank from UK. I have heard from reliable sources that some divisions/groups have no British students at all joining there department as newly minted analysts which is quite scary from my point of view.
Its getting tougher but as you say never overestimate the competition .
