I have not had time to research this yet, sorry. Just to explain a bit: This is a “legacy website” that was launched in 2007 back when there was almost no information online about finance careers. It was useful and saw a lot of activity in its first 5-10 years. Since then, it has become less useful because the internet is now flooded with this content, and many of these topics have become commoditized, with everyone copying each other.

So, these days, I do not spend much time on it and generally publish only periodic updates and occasional new topics when it makes sense to do so.

I pretty much stopped doing reader interviews, which were the source for many of these articles, because Google changed its algorithm to favor keyword-based articles rather than stories, narratives, and personal interviews.

So: thanks for the suggestion. I realize there is some interest in this material, but, as a practical matter, I don’t know when we’re going to get to it, and it’s just not high on the priority list now, given the state of this market and the fact that this website is much less useful than it was a long time ago.

Hi Brian,

Just wanted to get in touch quickly about the previously mentioned ”how a VP can win their first client or how to win the first client at a new bank”. Have you had any chance to get some good material in your hands since then or you might be working on an article like that already?

:) sorry for the impatience

Thank you for your reply.

That would be really great and interesting!

Thanks. I will see if we can cover that topic in the future (how a VP can win their first client or how to win the first client at a new bank), but as of right now, we don’t have much on this, and I don’t have much experience personally (never reached the senior levels in the industry, as I left earlier to start this business).

I was wondering if you could also explain in greater detail how would one go about finding and winning his very first client if just starting out as a fresh vp or as a new ib boutique (I guess the article assumes the banker already knows some clients). So the actual sourcing and finding of new clients…how does that work?

Sorry, I don’t know. We don’t specialize in or know anything about these types of agreements.

As an agent, I myself have successfully found a partner for the company (a bank), which can provide them with a flow of transactions on the issue of bonds, that is, recommends IB services to his clients.. The company is ready to pay me for each such partner (who will give a flow of transactions) 10% of its remuneration for all transactions of companies that such a partner recommends to us. There may be 5-10 companies (=deals) per year.

Of course, for life (always) these 10% of all transactions of the companies recommended by the partner, this company refuses to pay me.
What period it would be fair to set – no one knows: 1 year, 2 years, or another period. Can you give advice on how to determine this? Or suggest a timeline that you deem fair? Can any of the readers share their ideas?

For an introduction to a potential client do you find that sending them a letter introducing your firm is better than emails or coldcalling?

But I think you should also mention alternative deal sourcing and lead generation resources available for new investment banking professionals. For example Barbarika Global (barbarikaglobal do com) offers lead generation and deal closure tools for startup and OTC equity financing besides transactions for convertible bonds and project loans.
