In reply to Brian. This interview is from a long time ago, and I've never seen great data on compensation in this area. But my guess is that it's a pretty substantial discount to mega-fund PE pay, i.e., 50%+, since impact investing funds are much smaller and tend to have lower returns.

Brian – this is super helpful. One follow up however, what do you think is the pay for an entry level position (associate coming from a top IB) at one of the major buyout shops (TPG, KKR, BX etc) relative to the counterpart on the traditional PE side?

In reply to Anu. Impact investing is incredibly competitive to get into. They want people who have a mix of finance and non-profit/policy experience. So... potentially, yes, but you should get some finance-related experience to have a better chance.

Thanks for this interview. I am a doctor, and have worked with government bodies on shaping up healthcare policies for 5 years. I am now pursing my MBA, and would like to move into the impact investment space. Do you think I would be a desirable hire for these companies given that I come from a non-finance background?
