Hi Chris – I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts on transitioning and working for an elite placement agent firm like yours or a PFG. I currently have an alts background focusing on quasi-institutional LPs. Thx!

I can’t comment on registration or other legal requirements, sorry. This site mostly deals with careers in terms of recruiting, advancement, and compensation as you move up. We stay away from legal/registration/tax/related issues because you’re better off talking to a licensed professional for those.

I started my career in commercial real estate and gradually began advising my clients (RE funds, private investors) on raising capital, I used my connections and basically connected A with B. Does this qualify as a PA and do I have to register as a broker-dealer?
Thanks

I’m not sure offhand, but I believe it is possible because all these groups have Associates. However, there may be more of an emphasis on internal promotions and less on MBA recruiting (but, again, I don’t have much data to back this up – just going on the notes from this discussion a few years ago).

It depends how the placement agent firm you’re at is structured. The firm/group as a whole earns commissions based on capital raised, but they’re probably not going directly to you personally until you are more senior in the group.

Thanks for this article, very informative as always!

If as a PA you bring on a new GP and we manage to raise for them would you get a % of the fee billed to the fund because you sourced it?

Many thanks!

Sorry, I don’t really know enough about this area to say. But I think it would be quite difficult to move into PE directly from here. Other groups at a large bank are more realistic options.

I am still curious about the exit opportunity after placement agent type 2(I guess). Is this possible to go to PE or IBD’s investment strategy department? (I don’t care about the sector or departemnt), not as a sales?

I am a 2-years experienced coverage relationship manager(=sales) for a global Japanese bank, and I want to change my position to a strategy/analytical position which means I can do modeling/valuation/and more things. And I got an offer from a placement agent which assists funds amount USD 10 bn
I am wondering about the exit opportunities after working as a private placement agent.
After reading this article, I feel it is a sales position that I quit.
But if it provides me the exit opportunity into the investment decision department, I want to join.
Can you answer me? Thanks a lot.
