It’s difficult to answer those questions in a short comment here, but for monitoring portfolio companies, you’d ask for periodic information on their financial statements, customer data, payroll, and bank account balances. For the VC business model, understand how funds are structured, how they raise capital, invest, and then distribute the proceeds when exits happen, and terms like DPI, TVPI, etc. This article has a good overview (geared toward PE but most of it also applies to VC funds):
