All you can really do is try to do as much remotely as possible and avoid in-person meetings until they’re absolutely necessary. After the past few years, it’s probably easier to pull this off because everyone’s used to working remotely now. Another option would be to switch banks or groups and move to one that is more open to people leaving.

In this case, the biggest issue is probably that this was an Associate looking to leave, when most banks expect them to stay for the long term (even though that rarely happens). If you’re an Analyst and they object to you interviewing for other roles and expect you to stay forever, you are probably better off switching groups/banks because that’s a ridiculous expectation.

Thanks. That is a good question. There doesn’t appear to be much information online about PE headhunter careers, probably because it’s sort of like wealth management or other sales roles: if you close a lot of deals / place a lot of candidates, you get paid well and move up, and if not, you don’t. The job itself doesn’t necessarily change that much between levels.

I believe that some of the top headhunters can earn in the high 6 figures to possibly low 7 figures since they could place dozens of candidates per year and take 20-30% of each one’s compensation. But the average is lower, probably more like what Associate-level bankers earn (or below that in some cases). And MD/Partner-like compensation probably doesn’t happen (except for maybe the top few in the field each year?).
