I would probably pick BMO just because of the location / access to other lateral and exit opportunities.

I don’t know enough to have a strong view of the group, sorry. But you will be at a disadvantage for NY-based PE / other roles if you’re on the west coast. There are some groups with good reputations there (e.g., MS Menlo Park), but even in those groups, most people tend to stay in west coast roles after. My advice is to take the offer if it’s the best one you have and to consider an alternate offer only if it is NY-based.

I’m interested in technology but I think that I would like to make the switch to NYC for PE or possibly re-recruit for a full time analyst spot (maybe transfer internally?). Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the group and exit ops

Probably Jefferies because it’s better-known within finance and even outside it (no, not a bulge bracket (yet), but people are still more likely to know it over Raines, even though Raines is well-respected in its market).

What would you think between a Jefferies offer and a Raine group? Personally I am not sure what I want to do after banking.

Spring weeks are sometimes overrated (you can get IB internships without them, and there’s a lot of misleading information about them online), but in this case, the Jefferies one is probably a better bet if they hire a higher percentage of interns from it. No idea on the specific numbers here, sorry – I haven’t been an intern in a few decades and don’t really track bank-specific information anymore.

Thanks a lot for your articles, they have been a great source of info for me. I have been given two IBD offers for spring weeks in London that overlap in time, and I am currently trying to decide between them. I have been given Nomura, where I’d spent two weeks working on the desk with the TMT group, and Jefferies, which is a standard 4 day insight into the bank etc. I’ve heard that it’s their only pipeline to summer recruiting, and they take lots of spring interns. Nomura only fast-tracks some of its interns to summer, a friend of mine who did it says that they took 50-60%. What do you recommend? Do you have any insight that might help me make a more informed decision? Thanks Brian.

This seems pretty easy: Do you want to do investment banking or sales & trading? If IB, Citi; if S&T, HSBC.

If you’re undecided in the current environment, I would almost always recommend IB over S&T because S&T has declined over time and, these days, it’s appropriate mostly for people who are very, very interested in specific products/strategies within it. IB is much better for generalists.

I was wondering between Citi Capital Markets vs HSBC S&T summer analyst internship position – both in EMEA! Unable to decide which one is better.
