I would recommend reading this for consulting vs. finance: https://mergersandinquisitions.com/management-consulting-vs-investment-banking/

For the skills required in these other finance roles, please see the “career path” articles on this site because they cover the most common daily tasks, common interview questions, etc.

First, Thank you for making this blog, it helped me a lot and it cleared most of my questions.
Also, this is my first time getting into the world of finance. So, my question to you is:
1. I’m confused whether i should go for consulting or Finance related role, how can i figure it out ?

2. If im going into Finance related role then what are the things i should learn?
for eg: lets say portfolio manager or risk management or private equity associate. what are the skills required for these jobs and where can i learn it from scratch.

3. if i choose consulting then what are the skills required for that. Also, could you please tell me which one would be better according to you?

P.S- sorry for my message, i know its confusing that is because im confused myself. I cant seem to get clarity so could you please help me out ? i have watched lots of podcast and read articles and i keep getting confused and as i came across your blog and saw the comment section you seem very reliable guy so im not holding back and asking for your help / guidance.

Also, im still a undergrad, pursuing BCA which is almost similar to CS. But as i joined in this course i dont seem to enjoy it at all or i feel very drained about this course, i dont seem to enjoy coding. Most of the time my brain stops working while coding since i dont like doing it but i found out that im very much interested in talking with people and ask them about their problems and try to solve it as much as possible, it doesn’t matter if the problem is personal or not, i’d step in and ask them and try to ease their problems. I may take few days coming up with the solution but i can definitely ease their problems and sometimes i can give solutions right away, which seem to work most of the time. Also, i like giving advice to the people (depends if i have knowledge about that particular topic or not but i’d do my research and then ill go back to them and talk about it ). So could you please guide / help me to get out of this problem im facing ( not sure if its a problem or not, maybe i made it a problem for myself).

You can switch banks after completing an internship (https://mergersandinquisitions.com/switch-banks-groups/), but it’s quite difficult and random, and your chances aren’t particularly high unless the hiring market is strong. In most cases, you’d be better off getting a FT offer from Citi, working there for a year, and then moving to Centerview as a lateral hire.

You could still try to network as your internship is winding down, and you may get lucky and find something, but your chances aren’t great for the reasons outlined in the article I linked to above.

I networked a crazy amount and made it to Superday at Centerview. I didn’t get the offer (one of the 2 partners I was going to interview with with walked out of the entire interview, (1 minute in) to take an important call and I don’t think this redounded to my benefit as the opportunity to impress a partner disappeared and I was left with the 1st year analyst) but I am still in contact with many connections there who were very generous and helpful. I got an offer from Citi New York IB but the group placement happens later. (I will shoot for M&A or Industrials). I want to be a career banker, a lot of my friends ended up getting Centerview offers, the culture seems unique in a great way, and my dream is still to end up there. Do you think it would be possible to go there after the Junior summer internship at Citi and what might be the best practices to make that as likely as possible?

Possibly, yes. I doubt that deal activity will be anything like it was in 2021. It may be a bit better than this year, but there are too many unknowns to say, as governments worldwide appear to be doing everything possible to crash their economies.
